Ask Why, Not Just What
Familiarity can sometimes look like understanding.
A Mason may know where to stand, what comes next, the name of a symbol, or how a particular custom is observed—and still never have asked why it matters.
There is nothing wrong with learning the what. We need it.
But eventually, the student of Masonry should begin asking why.
Why was this symbol chosen?
What principle is this custom trying to teach?
Why has this lesson been preserved for generations?
And perhaps most importantly—what is it supposed to change in me?
Ask an experienced Brother one thoughtful question today about something in Masonry you have always accepted but never really explored.
Then listen.
Because knowing what we do gives us knowledge of the Craft.
Understanding why helps us discover what the Craft is trying to teach us.
And living that lesson is where the real work begins.
Today’s Work: Ask one thoughtful question about something in Masonry you know—but have never really explored.
Masonry works when it’s done daily.
