Take the Extra Second

Most poor decisions don’t announce themselves as important decisions.

They happen quickly.

A sharp reply.

An impatient gesture.

A bit of gossip repeated because everyone else was talking.

An email sent while we’re irritated.

A judgment made before we know the whole story.

Sometimes the difference between reacting and responding is only one extra second.

Masonry teaches us to work deliberately.

A craftsman doesn’t strike the tool carelessly and then hope the result comes out right. He considers where the blow should fall.

Perhaps we could do the same with our words and actions.

Before answering when you’re irritated, pause.

Before repeating something about another person, pause.

Before assuming someone’s motives, pause.

Before sending the message you’re writing while angry…

Definitely pause.

😂

That extra second won’t solve every problem.

But it may give your better judgment enough time to catch up with your first reaction.

Today’s Work:
When something irritates, frustrates, or surprises you today, deliberately take one extra second before responding.

Ask yourself:

“Is what I’m about to say or do going to improve this?”

Then respond.

Tonight, ask yourself:

What changed today because I gave myself one extra second?
